Light ~ #006 June 2014 – Haiga and Haibun for Sunday Photo Fiction
early summer. a single shell. bobbing. off shore. i draw a blank. invited. i’m here. watching.
six people. in each racing canoe. speed. strength. endurance. timing. paddles in sync. an off cadence paddle. easy to spot. from shore. harder to know. you are off stroke. after stroke. paddling. in the canoe. i suspect. a grueling. challenge.
this practice. inside the reef. slapping chop. rolling waves. cutting bow. pounding heart. race out. turn. race back. how many strokes? each canoe. finding pace. flying rhythm. breath.
wild sea. beyond the reef. open. sea. paddling. another level of energy. tumbling. wave mist. fills the air. drifting. to shore. the taste. of brine. and seaweed. pungent.
buffeting wind. tall grass. fronds clatter. an easy sun. on my skin. morning water. warm. whispering. against the sand. against the distant. reef. the sound of waves. a dull roar.
i walk. to the water. i stand. beneath my feet warm sand. this surge. of sea foam. slosh. around. my ankles.
different worlds. frenetic. racing canoes. intense. watchers. along the shore.
an easy day. i sip water. i begin. breathing. lightness.
exhaling. i close my eyes. inhaling. eyes open. i begin. an observation meditation. along. the summer shore.

My response is in the form of haiga and haibun. Two of the many Haiku and Related Forms in the field of poetry.
- Haibun as I see it is prose or poetry (other than haiku) plus one or more haiku.
- Haiga as I see it is image which includes haiku as part of the image—image and haiku as one work.
