My unedited #FWF Free Write Friday: Trust verse for Kellie Elmore’s (.com) blog challenge follows. In the finished work (above) I’ve slightly altered the free write verse (below) in a few places and broken it up to suit my visual format.

Interesting for me, I’ve discovered at other times, I like what happens when I match up lines randomly going across in verse formats (as above in two columns) even though the original was one column.  When I read it in my head (going across) I begin to hear two voices. I like that. Of course I still like it as a single column read too.

Also for me, this reads almost like poetic prose, something I also like—and in that way it relates a step closer to more typical haibun thinking.

The original #FWF Free Write Friday writing, uncut and raw, took about nine minutes including the first three lines—which turned out to be the haiku (because I often think that way now)—and which I also like:

unlocked

the garden gate I enter

butterflies

a floating trail

3:57 PM

this winter day

full of sunlight

on the island

the sound of mowing

lawns

a dog barks

a skateboarder

rumbles

on the street below

the breeze is cool

I could doze

and still the garden

pulls me

kumquats

passionfruit

limes

grapefruit

which will flower

first?

soon no doubt

the avocado tree

already sending buds

to open

draw the bees

the drone of insects

in the stillness

the seasons shift

seed catalogues

on the kitchen table

mid winter

spring on my mind

the rains will come

the plants will grow

small bits of soil

pushed aside

dead leaves crumble

an ant

a snail

the warmth of sunlight

I trust this passage

of seasons

each year

I watch

for the first dragonfly

and remember

those blue damsels

and red dragonfly

scarlet knights

nothing like cutting

a taste of sugarcane

when summer dust

coats

the garden path

through an unlocked

garden gate
