These “Sky Lanterns” were new here this year.   Ever stronger bans and fines and fees on fireworks seem to be generating alternatives.  The ladders (left and right in the photo) are about one third to one quarter the height from a few years ago.  That’s where huge, thick, long coils of firecrackers are suspended and then lit – yeah one big long wow.

The lanterns are quiet, relatively smokeless and quite awe evoking.  At times I could spot 8 to 10 in the sky in one direction.  They were fascinating to watch.  If they are not banned I suspect the numbers will multiply next time.  They drift with the breeze ever higher and ever farther from the flame heat until out of sight. It was spell binding – and that was fun.
