  1. the temperature got better, nearly spring, but after -20 C, a 0 C feels like spring! So, my brain unfroze and I did a response.
I know, though, how cold it can be to have 10 t0 15 C inside a house, and not having heating, not fun!

    • aloha Benedicte. way cool. i mean. . . . way fun that the (relative) warmth brought out a response for you. i like that the image was able to stay with you in that way.

yeah, it can be chilly with those tempts in a house. i dress in layers. it usually warms up on most days. this has been a chilly winter. some years are like that. still. . . . the sun is out now and it is bright warm. at the moment a cardinal is singing up a red-yellow-blue sky just outside my window. cool on that too.

oh. i sneaked a peak at your response. wow. a gem both in image and words. maybe we should practice this unthaw-thaw method?? way cool. fun. i mean. aloha.

      • The palm tree was haunting me! A palm tree and all that snow, it was two opposite images, quite fun to merge them.
Winters are getting different everywhere, here it is warming, in France they have more snow and you have more cold…
Here too some days the sun is so bright and the sky deep blue, beautiful. Winter skyes are beautiful.
Yes go in your freezer for a moment and come out to thaw, and you will thank me…aloha

        • cool. a good haunting, i’d say. that opposite image or juxtapositioning often sets up a good haiku. i’d call that “a haiku moment” when you make that connection. and yeah, that is fun for me too.

your words have a lot of the elements of haiku, maybe the haiku bug is seeping into you. that would be very cool. yes, winter skies can be very beautiful.

ha. yeah, i probably could use some skull time in a freezer. might settle my scattered thoughts a bit. . . .

          fun on. aloha.

  4. My link is up Rick!

I was surprised at myself because as soon as I noticed this prompt, I logged off and decided to let it sit in my mind for a while. But I had to log back again because I thought of something immediately. I quite like the music of my own haiku!! But of course, will have to wait and see what others think.

    Thanks again!

    • very cool and aloha Knot2Share. thank you for letting me know in the comments here that you’ve linked on, that helps me a lot.

i like your process. it may not always happen that fast but letting yourself be still and sit (often by going about what you normally do too) until it comes to you—i find that can work in unique and surprising ways. i like that.

yeah too. when we enjoy our own work i think that is a good thing. pushing the edge with our work is a good thing too so that we dont always know quite what to think about it immediately. that too me means we are exploring in new territory as often as not. that is also a good thing to do.

i too enjoy the moments i create in. the works that come out of those moments often give me that “ahhhh. ah-ha” feeling. sometimes those feelings can surface years later when i see the work. sometimes ideas for more work come when i look again too. we are one of our own best resources if we allow our self to think that way and be (imo).

regardless of what others think. go after the music you like. sometimes we do not see that music (or others can not see it) until there are enough in the pattern of that music to grasp the beauty in the sound. then the light goes on. and then, it’s oh. w.o.w. bing.

fun on, you are welcome and thank you too. aloha.

    • aloha Angie – see. i never get to see robins here. and i remember them. i used to watch for them in my yard when i was littler. i even named a few because i could recognize them. they’d come back the next year. yeah, hawaii can be warm. not the extremes of hot or cold the mainland has. still. the mainland has robins. cool on seeing one. aloha.

    • aloha and way cool Poetic Rabbit. if you see palms, most likely these palms can be there too. there are a lot of different kinds of palms of course. they all have one thing in common. . . . yeah, that’s that we human beings call them “palms”.

way cool on the link up. way fun. with NaHaiWriMo this month maybe you’ve noticed i’m behind a little faster? yeah. the plan is still to get there tho.

mahalo for the link up and letting me know here when you do. and just in case . . . . unbrrrr on you. aloha.

  6. heat seeking palms. can i just link photos? i’m a photographer as well. well. i don’t like to label myself photographer or poet type thing, you know, as an exit strategy, should someone call my bluff as just a weird human being. i don’t know how to write haiku or haiga or anything else. but i sure would like to share photos.

    • aloha Disastress. cool. i like that idea of linking up a photo. in fact that sounds like a great idea—respond to an image with an image that you connect up. cool. of course go for it.

as Benedicte called it a “visual poem” i like that term. Visual Poetry. way fun.

yeah, labels can be restrictive as well as informative. i’d rather see using photos as a technique with tools in which i can explore, than to label myself as a photographer. . . . or a poet. or a writer. maybe even a painter. okay, okay, i may take the label artist. only in the broadest sense. . . . the one that is all inclusive of the creature human being.

you explore words in amazing ways. i like that too. so short form poetry is cool as far as i’m concern. and long form. . . . heck, it’s your blog. respond as you intuit. got flash? got image? got story? got sound? got novel? got movement? got epic? got. . . . okay, okay, you get the idea. do it. that would be cool.

bwahahahaha – calling your bluff. if anyone calls your bluff just spew poetry at them. or poetic words. or weird human being verse. a non-weird human being is an oxymoron.

yeah, sometimes i know i dont know how to write haiku or haiga either. at those times—i pretend. and i keep on pretending until i’m doing it. that is of course how we become. pretend you are and you begin to be. then just keep going on from there.

share photos. or anything else you connect up as appropriate. this box has no floor. and the walls are walk-through. only the ceiling counts and we are standing on it. that’s the way i see it.

make sure you do it fun. if it’s fun, you’ll want to do it again. that’s good as i see it. aloha.

      • Boy, am I extra dumb, numb, lumped in a sump pump. I realize now, you want us to write about your picture … Somehow I conjured in my brain that you wanted us to take a photo and write a haiku about it. Where do these hallucinations come from? Ha! I’m sorry, even though I know you don’t mind. It would be fun though, to airship through pics, like how we have been having a conversation through poetry these past couple of days- which is do much fun, by the way. And you write most excellently without borders. So much fun, that I was thinking I would like to start a mister linky thing. Like I begin the conversation and ppl participate and respond. No limits. Problem is, I’m not super “popular” on here and I would only get like 2 responses. Haha. I have no idea how to get that idea out, but it sounds like a fun game. You are do good at it, I wonder if others would be as fun … As you said up there, everything has to be for fun… Anyway, I’m still waiting on your rebuttal to our current poetic conversation! Wapeesh! (Cracking the whip). Also, I’m just gonna take your advice and fake it re haiku and stuff. Haha. Pay no mind to my patterns, cause they’ll prolly be wayyyy off.

Do you know how many ppl are sitting around watching TV right now? This rules.

        • nah. you’re spot on Disastress. i wanted you to respond to the image. if taking a photo and writing a haiku about it is your response (which i see it was), then that’s it. that’s the thing to do.

in fact. others have done exactly what you were thinking, they took a photo and created haiku (then some put them together as one image which would make it haiga – but they didnt have to do that or they could do that either way – and some have taken the photo and kept the haiku seperate – that’s cool too). altho in truth, it doesnt have to be haiku either.

your idea – is exactly one of the the ways to start out. or maybe i should say is how i started out with Ku On This. there was no Mr Linky then (at least not that i knew of). prompts werent all that popular at that time (it seemed to me) and after 6 months or so (maybe it was 3 or 4 or maybe it was 5 or 6 weeks) i didnt do any more. that was in 2010.

then in 2011 i did a month of haiga and invited others to join in. one a day for the 30 days of September. a few people did. then, someone asked if i was going to do it again in 2012. right then, i knew i was. so i did it again in 2012. and a few more people played and i used Mr Linky. because i’d seen a couple of other people using it so i looked into it. now i intend to do it again in 2013.

then, someone asked if i was going to do Ku On This again. that wowed me – wow, someone remembered that. wow. so i decided maybe i would. and this is it. i’ve set a goal for myself this time to do it for a year. one a week. so that is my goal, regardless of how many people play in it. regardless of how many play in it or how often if i reach my goal, i’ll feel good about doing that.

popular isnt all it’s cracked up to be as i see it. you can be popular by giving people money. i think what is better is if i do something good. the best that i can do. if i do that then it doesnt matter whether others join in or not. it doesnt matter if it’s a “success” in the eyes of the world even. because no matter what else happens i will always have something good that i did.

figuring out how it will work (your prompts or calls or what ever you see it as – a scavenger hunt, a game) takes some thinking about. and try and trials help to refine it. just because it doesnt work the way you’d like it to work doesnt mean it’s not a good idea. tweak it if it doesnt work the way you think it should work. and give it a good length of time to let people figure out if they like it or not and have time to play in it. it has to be fun for them as well as for you of course.

i find too that responding to people helps. responses that are more than yay. or cool. tell them what you see. or like. or what something they do reminds you of that you like. play. and have fun. those all seem to be things people like. offer them what you can give. it’s tricky not to be teachering. i slip into that mode and that is not a good mode to be in on the net (imo). . . . . unless that’s what is expected of course.

do things that people find fun and they will come around. or, team up with someone, collaborate. that pools two groups of people together (yours and theirs) and from that you may find you have a bigger audience. it has to be a win win for both of you tho, as i see it.

          just thoughts. you know.

and play in what other people are doing too. people see that and if they like the way you play they will want to come see what else you do.

for me, followers and likes did not happen quickly. that’s okay by me since i wanted to blog for my own reasons. the more i blog and the more regularly i blog the more people seem to take a look at what i’m blogging. that’s all i can ask for. that people take a look. some stick around some do not. that’s okay.

i’m not interested so much in the “get a lot of followers quick” show. i want to do what i’m doing regardless of how many followers or likes or comments i have.

still. . . . it is nice when people respond. take a look at my initial posts on this blog (early in 2010). you’ll see very few people responded. or commented. yet some of those people still do. and when one hasnt for a while and then they respond – wow. it’s like a long time friend has stopped by.

if you want some material to read on haiku i can send you some links. then you’ll know the rules you want to break. really, there is so much written about haiku (and there really are no rules – maybe guidelines but no rules – that are hard and fixed – if you go too far beyond all the rules it just becomes something else – pushing the edges tho – that’s fun) – so in truth, there has been so much written on haiku—by authorities of excellence on haiku— that no one can follow all the rules in any one haiku. and. in fact there are rules that have been passed down through time that are exact opposites of each other. still. . . . as i see it, it’s good to try to pick some rules to follow and some to break. that way it at least looks like we know what we are doing. fun.

and. heck. as i said. you dont have to do haiku to repsond to Ku On This. i’d rather you had fun. aloha

          • are you a teacher? professor? what issss iiitttttt?
nice work up there, i am encouraged. see? i want to have “fun,” and i don’t/can’t do what i want right now (winter), so using my brain is the best choice. i’m into it. i’m an explorer; and since i cannot go outside and see neat things, i’ll just have to astral travel, metaphorically speaking (or not).
so get this. i started a blog in ’04, just to continue on with writing. i was just starting a new journal, and my husband said, hey – duh, blog. i was all: what’s dat, mang? anyway, we set one up. so i am totally used to zero eyes, which may explain why i swear a lot. hahaha. well, cause i never lost my voice. actually, ACTUALLY, i didn’t start swearing in poetry until about 3 years ago. isn’t that funny? i closed it off, but i opened it this weekend for a limited time only, offer only available while supplies last – take a peek if you are way, way bored. but please, don’t feel obligated. i’m gonna close it back up on monday. i have a friend that wanted to check it out. it’s: annrichelle.blogspot.com – god, it feels good just typing that. i feel like, i have no idea. it’s so familiar, like an old blankey. sometimes i feel weird here on wordpress. sorry to bore you. point is, i closed it right after i quit my job of 12 years in october, to pursue my dreams. so it’s kinda neat, that the posts *stop* right after i quit! i like that, but i do miss it. i’m telling you all of this, because you told me the history of your prompts, and i think that’s so neat, you like, stuck to your true feelings without caring if you had other eyes on it, but ya did, ya did, eventually, didn’t ya? cause you were you. it’s coffee time here in chicago, god only knows what time it is in hawaii; but i prolly sound insane right now, so blame it on the dreams still trying to pull me under, and the caffeine running through my veins. hawaii. what a dream. chicago is an aching hell. my goal is to get out of here within 9 months. 10. that’s fair. like the time it takes to make a baby. birth a new life. (with these 3 other people and cats in tow, of course).

            • oh. i am a nobody. you know. no body. here. on the net. a know body by mind. a creature being of the planet. or. in this case. one of the planets.

encouraged is good. oh. winter. too. no problem. create. yes, using your brain to create. perfect. for winter. or any time. to do what you want creating. best choice. one of them. i suspect.

perfect beings are explorers. (imo). in fact that is a lot of my (personal) definition of art. and life. searching. we dont have to always know what we are searching for we just have to search.

yes, astral travel. and create. works. as i see it.

oh. yes, i’ve had other blogs. a number of them. i have a second one now on blogspot. the first one there stopped letting me post. that’s when i came here to WP. then they told me if i didnt do what i was told my blog would disappear. okay. i let it go. but i looked. it’s still there. i just havnt posted to it (maybe i can now. or not) for a while. i also looked at another place (multiply) where i was given similar instructions. do what we say or be lost. it’s still there but i dont post there now either. then there was Y360. which i cant find and it’s probably gone. and there is Gather. i’m still there but i dont post much. and there are a few other places too.

in fact. i was part of WHquestion when it was in it’s original form. (if that means anything or makes sense).

history. water. still. a learning device.

as i see it you (we, i) have to do what we are doing because we want to become our self. that’s what i can control—my self. my choices. so if i go in the right direction with my choices, that’s what i can control. everything else—i have no control over. of course i dont always make the right choices either. but i can try.

i say, get on with your dream—that’s only my opinion of course. write. or novel. or spin poetry. what ever it is. do it. your way. and become even more you. no letting winter stop you. snow it back. and zing on.

trying new things is cool too. that’s the explorer element coming into play as i see it. try it, if you like it, cool. if not try something else. keep the dream going into fruition in the mean time. each day. some. a little. a lot. but some each day. of both. dream. and new. (and of course revisits too).

looks like that is what your blog was doing—exploring your you. some blogs on blogspot work. some not so much.

i think WP has a better system for seeing other blogs. you still have to put in some time doing that tho. seeing other blogs. the more you see. the more who will come see you. start with the likes you get, go see their blog. find something you like on it. and like it. or comment. or do both. or all three—that is follow it too.

following just puts their posts in your reader. then you can see when someone posts and go look. this is time consuming for me but i try to actually go to the blog to look (i like seeing the feel of the blog better than clicking the like in the reader altho that is more efficient – i just like to go there to read and see).

read. and see. i’m a slow reader. and sometimes a slow see-er too. following people just makes their blogs your own private viewing choices. you can also surf by subject. or any word you want i suppose. see who is saying what, doing what around that. if you like. like. if you think a thought. comment. if you like and comment and want to see what else happens, follow. i try to stick to what i like because then people see what works or at least what works for one person.

be you. let the you that is you be what people come to comment on, like or follow on your blog. (yeesh this is not a good territory for me – advice. yick. maybe you should skip this part). as i see it those are the people you want to discover your work. your blog. your you.

i think chicago right now is about 4 hours different than hawaii. hawaii is earlier in the same day by 4 hours. so if it’s 8 AM in chicago it’s 4 AM in hawaii. in the summer the difference is 5 hours. it’s this planet we are on. there are 24 hours around the planet that are now all the time. it’s always midnight some place on the planet. it’s also always noon some place too. and every point in between. cool on that. . . . . even tho time is still just a human being made thing.

where ever you go. there you are. where ever you are is where you are. and it can always be heaven and it can always be hell. or any state in between. because it is what we bring to it (imo). at least that’s how i see it now. tomorrow i may see it in some other way of course. altho i do like hawaii, some people do not. and there are drawbacks. lots of them. there are pluses and minuses to every place. no place is like any other. be in one place long enough and we stop seeing it fresh. unless we try. make your place the way you want it to be. and if you can not, then pretend it is until it is. again. as i see it.

play on. fun on too. and create. aloha.

  7. Hi Rick,
I wanted to thank you for the opportunity you give to everyone to experiment with what I call visual poem. You do it with persistence and patience and encouragements, Aloha to you!
for this image, though, my mind is blocked, due to winter block. We are in the coldest days and palm trees are an image I cannot process for now but will read with interest others more tenacious than me.

    • aloha Benedicte – you are welcome of course—and thank you for playing too.

i like your term “visual poem”. a lot. exactly.

yeah, sometimes my mind blanks on a prompt too. the only remedy that has worked for me is to say, okay, i’m not going to worry about it—and then i do one of two things: I let it go completely (there are almost always other things i want to do and i go to one of those). or. i simply take the first thing that pops into my skull and i begin working there and i work it through until i get it to where it wants to go.

i’ve found this second solution—the one where i begin working on the first thing i thought often leads me to startling revelations and work that i often like beyond the usual. it tends to be different and unique (even if occasionally it is like something someone else thought about too—most of the time it is not).

way cool what ever you do. respond visually if you’d like too. that would be way cool as well—altho i do understand that winter block. brrrr. and cold and how it can keep slipping into the mind.

it is actually cold here too. for here. (it is our winter). sometimes the temps are down in the lower 50′s (10 celsius). which may not be that cold compared to your cold of course, however there is no heat in the houses here. so that temperature outside tends to linger inside as well. altho. . . . not usually around the clock for 24 hours.

heat on. and bundle up too. aloha.
